Free computer classes at Troke Library

STOCKTON - Let the library help you learn computers and technology! The Troke Library will offer the following free computer classes:

- Thursday, June 16 @ 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. - E-Mail Basics

- Thursday, June 23 @ 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. - Social Networking for Beginners

- Thursday, June 30 @ 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. - Beginning Microsoft Excel

These classes are designed to help new computer users get comfortable with technology. We welcome patrons who have little or no computer/technology experience. At the end of each class, the trainer will answer other computer/technology questions. All classes are drop in - no reservations are required.

Grilling safety tips for Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day weekend marks the start of grilling season and the California Department of Public Health wants everyone to have a delicious and safe BBQ experience. This video features Food Safety Chief Pat Kennelly providing grilling safety tips to keep you and your family healthy all season long! Ensuring that the food you serve is safe is as simple as following these practical approaches:

Wash your hands with warm, soapy water before and after handling food.
Make sure your utensils and food contact surfaces are clean. Never put fresh vegetables or ready to eat foods on cutting boards or platters used for raw meat or poultry unless the surfaces have been thoroughly washed with soap and water.
Thaw your frozen meat and poultry in a refrigerator, not on the kitchen counter. Make sure that juices from thawing meats cannot drip onto other food in the refrigerator.

Keep your family safe this Memorial Day weekend

This spring’s above average rainfall has led to an abundance of grass, brush and water throughout the state. While the weather is ideal for Californians and tourists to enjoy recreating in the outdoors, CAL FIRE officials are reminding everyone of the importance of safety this holiday weekend.

Despite rain as recent as this week, the grass and brush in many areas has begun to dry out and is becoming increasingly flammable. CAL FIRE crews have already seen an increase in the number of wildfires, even with the late rain.

"Many people don’t realize that most of the low lying grass only takes an hour to dry out," said Chief Ken Pimlott, acting director of CAL FIRE.

Stockton approves first pot dispensary

STOCKTON, CA - Stockton approved its first medical marijuana dispensary permit Thursday night, which could put the pot business and potential new jobs in town by September.

"They had all their ducks in a row," said Stockton Planning Board Chair, Samuel Fant.

"Hopefully it draws more attention to the area that's good, especially with all of the new security."

The attorney representing 209 Collective marijuana dispensary said the business promises security guards and surveillance cameras in the shopping plaza on its own dime.

"We own several dispensaries in Sacramento and I have letters from the shopping center owner and police personnel who say crime was reduced after we moved in," said Max Del Real, president of Capitol Solutions, representing the dispensary. His dispensary was approved to move into Eastland Plaza on Wilson Way.

USA Today and Rand McNally have teamed up to present the Best of the Road contest. They're looking for the best small towns in America. All you have to do is tell them about your favorite town, write a review and/or add photos. The top towns will be featured in USA Today's Best of the Road cross-country rally this summer and in the 2013 Rand McNally Atlas next year!

Time is running out to submit your "best town." You have until May 23 to go to www.bestoftheroad.com and nominate or vote for your community as the Most Fun, Most Patriotic, Most Beautiful, Best for Food or Friendliest town in America. You can also vote for attractions -- like the best coffee shop, historic hotel or hiking trails.

The top towns will also land a permanent spot on Rand McNally’s new travel Web site, as well as on USA Today's Travel Web page.
