San Joaquin Co. Sheriff seeks FBI help in locating 'Speed Freak' victims

STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) - The sheriff of San Joaquin County says he will ask the FBI to take over the job of searching for and recovering the remains of victims linked to two serial murderers known as the Speed Freak Killers.

The Record of Stockton says Sheriff Steve Moore announced his intentions Tuesday after the mother of one of the victims criticized his agency's retrieval work.

Joan Shelley says her daughter JoAnn Hobson's remains were returned to her mixed with bones from at least three other people.

Shelley thinks the FBI is better equipped to excavate the well in Linden where the bodies were found.

Death row inmate Wesley Shermantine provided maps this year of sites where he said he and his late co-conspirator, Loren Herzog, disposed of victims from their killing spree in the 1980s and 90s.
